Over the weekend, Chanel staged a coveted 2020/21 Métiers d’art collection that was as fashionable as it was fantastical — giving us all a form of escapism that we’ve been longing for this past year.
Held at the Château de Chenonceau in France’s Loire Valley, Virginie Viard took the creative reigns of the maison and delivered a 67-look collection that boasted magnificent simplicity and majesty as it was inspired by the Renaissance. With a Chanel twist of course, the collection paid tribute to long velvet coats, neck ruffles, rich pearl embroidery and tweeded capes.
Further highlighting the incredible craftsmanship of the fashion house whilst staying true to its design aesthetics, the collection featured miniskirts paired with pastel-hued tights, leather motorcycle jackets, mullet dresses, signature bouclé jackets and long evening dresses.
“Showing at the Château de Chenonceau, at the “Château des Dames”, was an obvious choice,” confides Virginie Viard. “It was designed and lived in by women, including Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici. It is a castle on a human scale. And Catherine de’ Medici’s emblem was a monogram composed of two intertwined Cs, just like that of Chanel.”
