When the Duchess of Sussex appeared on stage at the 2018 Fashion Awards yesterday, she surprised everyone, not least Clare Waight Keller whom she was there to present an award to. For the occasion, Meghan wore a black one-shoulder Givenchy Couture gown (obviously) which she accessorised with a stack of three gold bracelets and gold stud earrings. And it turns out that the bracelets hail from our part of the world here in the Middle East.
The bracelets are from designer Pippa Small (a favourite of the Duchess’) and are made by artisans in Afghanistan as part of the Turquoise Mountain foundation. The non-profit foundation was established by Meghan’s father-in-law Prince Charles in 2006 and helps to restore historic buildings, train artisans, treat patients and help locals establish businesses across the Middle East. On its website the foundation writes that it “is working to preserve and revive Afghanistan’s arts and architecture through restoration projects, vocational training and linking Afghanistan artisans to international markets.”
The Duchess has worn other designs from the brand which were also made by Turquoise Mountain on her royal tour of Fiji earlier this year.
