Luxury brands including Burberry, Michael Kors and Gucci have been praised for their commitment to going fur-free by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in their annual Fashion Awards.
Released today, the organisation called the banning of fur by some of fashion’s top players the “biggest luxury moment” whilst their high-street counterparts, including H&M, Mango and Marks & Spencer were namechecked in the “biggest high street fashion moment” following their ban on mohair. ASOS was named as the Most Progressive Online Platform for having announced it will ban all mohair, cashmere, feathers and silk from the site in 2019 whilst Meghan Markle’s go-to sneaker brand Veja snapped up the award for “Best Vegan Shoe Collection” thanks to its cruelty-free production chain and recycled materials.
Other winners included Polish brand Alexandra K for “Best Vegan Bags” thanks to her use of apple leathers and silicone-free materials and London brand Jakke which makes wool-free sweaters. Helsinki Fashion Week was listed as the “Most Progressive Fashion Event” following its announcement that it will be entirely leather-free in 2019.
At the conclusion of the listing, PETA wrote, “Thanks to brands such as our compassionate award winners, the fashion industry is changing and we’re moving towards a kinder and more sustainable future.”
