Among these trailblazers is Dr. Eng. Suaad Al Shamsi, one of the UAE’s first female aircraft engineers. Her journey is one of passion, resilience, and defying expectations in a traditionally male-dominated field. From her childhood fascination with airplanes to becoming a leading figure in aviation, Dr. Suaad’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that no dream is too ambitious.
In this exclusive interview, she shares her experiences, challenges, and her vision for the future of women in STEM fields, inspiring us all to push the boundaries of what is possible.
As one of the first female aircraft engineers in the UAE, what inspired you to pursue this career in a traditionally male-dominated field?
Since I was young, I’ve loved airplanes, cars, and building toys. At my mother’s house, which was close to Dubai Airport, I would watch airplanes all day. This led to my growing fascination for airplanes, making me eager to learn about any related job. That’s when I discovered the world of aeronautical engineering—it felt like it was meant for me. My passion only intensified when I faced rejection from many people. I kept hearing that it was a male-dominated field, not meant for women. But each time, I would respond that there’s no dictionary that defines what a woman can or cannot do.
Can you share some of the significant challenges you faced early in your career and how you overcame them? What kept you motivated?
As a woman in aviation, like many others, I have faced challenges to overcome deep-rooted gender biases and stereotypes. Breaking free from such notions that aviation is a male-dominated field requiring resilience, determination, and support. By showcasing our skills, knowledge, and expertise, we can continue to challenge these stereotypes and pave the way for a more inclusive industry. Balancing work and personal life is another significant challenge. The demanding nature of aviation careers, including irregular schedules and extensive travel, can make it difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance. What motivates me to continue is my passion and commitment to this field.
What does being a judge for the James Dyson Award mean to you?
The James Dyson Award holds a special place in my heart. I’ve had the privilege of serving on the main jury for seven years. This award allows youngsters to showcase innovative ideas to make the world we live in better. As a judge, I am continually inspired by the creativity, determination, and innovative spirit of young designers and engineers. Every year, I am struck by the depth of thought and the practical solutions the youngsters present to real-world challenges. This process allows me to engage deeply with these talented minds, understand their journeys, and offer feedback that can help shape their future paths. Being part of the James Dyson Award gives me a platform to be a mentor. By sharing my experiences and insights, I aim to inspire these young innovators to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
How do you think the James Dyson Award can inspire and encourage more young women to enter engineering and STEM fields?
Each year we are getting more and more women enter the award. It always warms my heart when entries open and I receive messages from women on social media asking for my advice or sharing their experiences of seeing women, such as myself, making changes in the world. Last year’s winning team was mainly female, and by showcasing successful female participants and winners, the award can help young women see relatable role models in engineering and STEM. The James Dyson Award provides a platform for women to showcase their ideas and become inventors and creators, empowering them to break barriers.
What is your vision for the future of women in STEM fields in the UAE and beyond? How do you see the industry evolving to be more inclusive?
The MENA region is experiencing remarkable growth, with a noticeable increase in female participation in STEM fields. This shift paves the way for future generations of Arab women and opens doors to new opportunities. According to recent data, 57% of STEM graduates in the MENA region are women, with the percentage rising to 61% in the UAE. While I’m proud to see this increase, my vision and goals focus on addressing unconscious biases prevalent in the industry and education. These biases can hinder female STEM graduates from fully participating in various sectors and limit hiring opportunities. By supporting and contributing to efforts that overcome stereotypes and cultural barriers, we can help bridge this gap and create a more inclusive environment.
What advice would you give to young women who aspire to follow in your footsteps in engineering or other STEM fields?
The tech industry is often described as challenging for women, but it also has many qualities that make it an ideal field for women. The flexibility offered in the industry is unparalleled compared to many others. A key factor is believing in your own abilities. Studies show that women often underestimate their potential, which can prevent them from taking on challenges that are crucial for achieving their full potential. If women believe in their ability to succeed in tech, they will. Many exceptional technical leaders already demonstrate this.
What does Emirati Women’s Day mean to you personally, and how do you think it contributes to the recognition and celebration of women’s achievements in the UAE?
Emirati Women’s Day celebrates the achievements and enduring strength of women, highlighting the remarkable contributions of Emirati women across diverse fields. It emphasizes their pivotal role in shaping the progress of the United Arab Emirates. As an Emirati woman, I feel fortunate to receive constant support and trust from our leadership, which helps us nurture and refine our talents. This encouragement to learn, develop new skills, work diligently, and excel in our fields allows us to proudly represent our country. Emirati women are dreamers, believers, doers, and achievers, demonstrating that no task is impossible. Having a special day to recognize our achievements is empowering and acknowledges our ongoing progress in various fields.
