Enjoy this sneak peek at works that will be featured in “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” opening May 10. The Costume Institute’s 2025 spring exhibition presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism. Organized into 12 sections, or characteristics, that define this style, the show chronicles the ways in which Black people have used dress and fashion to transform their identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social possibilities. From ‘Champion,’ exploring the role of “uniform” and the history of athletic dress; to the ‘Respectability’ demonstrated by political and cultural leaders such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Frederick Douglass, who long understood the power of grooming and dress—and tailoring skills taught at HBCUs; the ‘Beauty’ and sheer fabulousness of style that began to emerge among Black males in the 1970s and ‘80s; and the ‘Cool’ cardigans, tracksuits, denim, and other casual styles that revolutionized fashion from the 1960s to the 1980s.
A celebration of Black style and craftsmanship, Superfine calls for sharp lines, tailored perfection, and, most importantly, the exploration of how Black culture has shaped the world of fashion, particularly menswear. Designed to “provide guidance and invite creative interpretation,” this year’s theme sets the stage for a night filled with high fashion and thought-provoking artistic expression.
At the helm of this iconic event is none other than basketball legend LeBron James, who has been tapped as the honorary chair for the 2025 Met Gala. His leadership will be complemented by an equally remarkable roster of co-chairs, including A$AP Rocky (who remains a fashion force despite ongoing legal proceedings), Oscar-nominated actor Coleman Domingo, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, and music icon Pharrell Williams. Together, they bring a diverse range of influence from sports, music, and Hollywood, reinforcing the theme’s rich connection to Black excellence.
The host committee for the 2025 gala is a veritable who’s who of influential figures, all of whom embody the profound impact Black talent continues to have across industries. Alongside the co-chairs, confirmed attendees include André 3000, acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, visionary designer Grace Wales Bonner, Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, and her husband Jonathan Owens, as well as celebrated visual artist Jordan Casteel.
Fashion’s very own Dapper Dan, music sensation Doechii, actress Ayo Edebiri, and former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful are also on the guest list, alongside the likes of playwright Jeremy O. Harris, artist Rashid Johnson, and Hollywood royalty Regina King. Filmmaker Spike Lee and his wife Tonya Lewis Lee will bring their iconic creative energies, while performers such as Usher and Janelle Monae are sure to add their touch of magic to the evening.
This year’s event will not only be a night of unforgettable fashion but also a powerful celebration of Black culture, creativity, and artistry in its myriad forms. Superfine: Tailoring Black Style will be a moment to honor those who continue to redefine the boundaries of what Black style can be, both on the runway and in the world. From the precision of a perfectly cut suit to the rich cultural history woven into every stitch, the 2025 Met Gala promises to be a night of breathtaking and transformative style. We’re beyond ready for it!
