The roaring 20s are back and it’s all thanks to Cartier

For the love of Art Deco
Art Deco makes a come back as Cartier bracelet sells for $6.1 million (Dhs22.4 million) in Sotheby’s sale…

What’s the latest craze amongst buyers of the high jewellery world? Well, it seems everyone with a penchant for big, shiny and extraordinary is turning their interests (as well as their wallets) toward Art Deco pieces.

Yes, the roaring 20s and 30s are back becoming increasingly popular amongst jewellery buyers, and Sotheby’s latest auction would attest to that. Its latest sale, held earlier this week in Geneva, saw a 1927 Cartier sapphire and diamond bracelet fetch $6.1 million (Dhs22.4 million), one of the highest prices at auction for an Art Deco bracelet, Sotheby’s says.

“The magic of Art Deco continues to exert its spell on collectors around the world, with so much of tonight’s rich offering racing away,” said David Bennett, Worldwide Chairman of Sotheby’s Jewellery Division. “With its sensational ‘sugar loaf’ Burmese sapphire and powerful geometric design, the Cartier bracelet that led tonight’s sale was a true masterpiece, among the most important Art Deco pieces we’ve ever handled.”

The bracelet, which came from the collection of a visionary Asian-American collector, is set with a beautiful Burmese cabochon sapphire weighing 46.07 carats, flanked by two pear-shaped D Colour diamonds weighing 8.60 and 9.27 carats respectively. Pursued by six bidders, it sold to an Asian collector, and was one of the highlights of a sale totalling $53.9 million (Dhs197.9 million) which also included — from the same Asian-American collection — a sapphire and diamond clip brooch by Cartier from 1937.
