With fire or not, Saint Laurent brought the heat for Summer ’21

Anthony Vaccarello invites all of us to a form of escapism for Summer '21...

We’re seriously still crushing over Anthony Vaccarello‘s take on wardrobe for the upcoming Summer ’21 season. Since taking over the helm of Saint Laurent in 2016 — continuing Hedi Slimane‘s stratospheric success — the Belgian fashion designer has strongly empowered a highly desirable vision with androgynous silhouettes, XXS separates, major bling and daring sophistication.

This particular launch for Summer ’21 marked a difference from previous collections as it was purely in the sphere of comfort. With inspiration taken from the YSL archives (specifically the use of thick jersey uncovered from 1968), the collection consisted of the signature slick, strong-shouldered tailoring and slick latex, as well as lightweight tunics, trousers and new versions of Le Smoking.

Designed to take you from day to night (perhaps without the lace hot pants), the collection came in a monochrome-meets-neutral colour scheme of black and white, with a few pops of patterns.

A mix between fantasy and fancy, the collection was complimented with stunning sculptural jewellery, a selection of which was by Claude Lalanne.

“I wanted to focus on the essence of things,” explains Vaccarello. “I think it’s a sign of the times. But I didn’t want anything bleak or heavy. The desert, to me, symbolizes that yearn for serenity, open space, a slower rhythm.” As for the collection, the Creative Director explained that “the clothes are also softer, the spirit of the collection is more gentle, stripped back.”

Leave it to Anthony Vaccarello to bewilder your senses with a sweet escape — something we all need to end the challenging year.
